The Life and Work of Petrovic Petar
"I wish I had been born black, black people are so much cooler than white people!"-Petrovic Petar: avid documentarian, prolific writer, compulsive traveller, champion of the African Renaissance and lover of many women.
"The Life and Work of Petrovic Petar" is performed by Jason Potgieter and directed by Sanjin Muftic. The illustrations come courtesy of the artistic talents of Jonothan Keevy.
"The Life and Work of Petrovic Petar" is a multimedia and live production telling the story of this young boy who found himself a refugee in Africa. Growing up in the cultures of the continent, all Petrovic Petar wants to be is black. He dreams of becoming the editor of the first tasteful high-quality publication of African erotica. As he grows up he attempts to integrate himself with the continent: engaging in discussions with key African leaders, living through unique rituals, and attempting to persuade some of its most beautiful women to pose for his magazine.
The story of his life becomes a tour of Africa, but Petrovic Petar is not someone your tourist agent would recommend as a guide. His unique perspective and experiences lead you through deserts, have you listen in on discussions with Haile Selassie, and give you a front row seat to Africa's struggle for independence. Petrovic's journey of belonging, captured in a captivating balance of live performance and illustration/film, asks what it means to be an African.
