Yawazzi Theatre Productions together with the UCT Drama Department present an evening of intimate acting with 2nd year English Acting students in a project entitled Not Here, directed by Sanjin Muftic and designed by Jon Keevy
Young lovers, now older and separated. One in a foreign country, safe but desolate. The other at home in a besieged city. While waiting for her to join him, Sheki writes long letters to Aida and waits for hers to find their way to him. In order to make himself feel that across this distance they share the same space, Sheki starts telling her stories. Old stories. Old stories of men and women who have also been separated from something that they love.
With these stories, the public square where Sheki waits is filled with a cast of midnight street party characters from across the eras: a rag time pianist, a crusader from the middle ages, a scientist before the renaissance... With every letter that Sheki writes, the characters dance their way through an intricate and ironic waltz of relationships. Each dance is like fight, a fight to keep the people you love with you, around you, and living. The night goes on, Sheki writes, the characters waltz...will Aida get here?
The 13 second year acting students, together with Bosnian born director Sanjin Muftic, are presenting an ambitious project. Working with the theme of separation, they have combined 5 different play texts into one unique heightened production. The stories of characters from The Castle (Howard Barker), Landscape (Harold Pinter), A Coin (Alexandar Hemon), The Heliotrope Bouquet (Eric Overmeyer) and Galileo (Bertolt Brecht) have all been interwoven to explore what a human being will do to hold on that which makes them who they are. Designed by Jon Keevy and performed outside in the Arena quad of the Little Theatre complex this production strives to give you an intimate evening of acting. We will give you the characters and their fight, the rest we will leave to your imagination.
Not-Here is presented from the 18th to the 20th of September, at the Arena Quad in the Little Theatre Complex starting at 9PM. Tickets are free.
