Live Comic Book

Taking inspiration from 1950s Nigerian pop literature, Yawazzi creates a multimedia comic book guide for the contemporary African woman for the Out the Box Festival.

Onistha Market literature featured stories of love and lust, cautionary tales and sensationalist pulp, diatribes on how to live the good life, get a better family and make more money. Written almost exclusively by men with larger than life opinions and unique views of the world it was energetic, crazy and patriarchal. Together with three talented actresses, Yawazzi turns it on its head, as women rewrite the rules for a better life in today’s South Africa.

The skills of director Sanjin Mutic and designer Jon Keevy join forces with three talented women: writer/actress Primrose Mrewbi, singer/actress Nobuhle Ketelo and Fleur-du Cap acting nominee Pumeza Rashe. A dynamic kaleidoscope collection of skits and scenes creating a hilarious exaggeration of characters and situations we all recognize from daily life.
