UCT Drama Department, with the help of Yawazzi Theatre Productions, will be staging an exciting new adaptation of William Shakespeare's Hamlet at The Little Theatre from the 16 of May 2009. This innovative adaptation brings the text closer to the experiences of our time, where action becomes confused with inaction. Together with the 3rd year acting students of UCT, and exciting design from Yawazzi, this production promises an exhilarating presentation of the brooding Dane.
This novel adaption works on the idea of multiple Hamlets, his inner conflict made tangible as his disparate drives fight amongst themselves to control Hamlet's soul, destiny, and the state of Denmark. The text is restructured as a retelling, highlighting the struggle for power, and the moments when Hamlet's decisions are made (or deferred) leading him to his fatal future. Hamlet's world is created with spectacular visual detail, striving to capture the in-between space of his existence as multitudes of stairs and projections create his Denmark.
While the production will encourage the attendance of students to re-investigate one of Shakespeare's texts, it is also an opportunity for the Cape Town audience to witness its younger talent define Shakespeare for our time. As the world around us seeks more accountability, it is impossible to not recognize the Hamlet we all live with. The one that can choose to act or not to act, and then live with the consequences of that decision. This Hamlet will probe the multiples of our personalities, and ask which part makes the final act.
The UCT Drama Department has invited Sanjin Muftic (director) and Jon Keevy (designer) of Yawazzi Theatre Productions. The two UCT master's graduates have established their company and have become leading artists in multimedia theatre within Cape Town, with their most recent work including clever multimedia design on La Scala di Seta (dir Lara Bye). Yawazzi's original productions including the Fleur-du-Cap nominated (Godfrey Johnson) Flirting with Coward (2008) , as well as crowd favourite Under the Stars, Above the Tree (2008) . The two have also worked on several UCT Drama Productions such as The Possibilities (2006) and Wounds to the Face (2007), where Sanjin Muftic also works as a part-time lecturer.
Tickets for Hamlet are R40 for adults, and R30 per pupil for groups of up to 10 students, and R28 for any groups with more than 10 students. Performances run from the 16 to the 30th of May, with matinee performances on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Performances will commence at 19h30 and will conclude by 22:00.
