Brel
“a real goodie…without artifice…interpretations are from the heart, with deep understanding” – Megan’s Head
Godfrey Johnson performs the songs of Jacques Brel at Tabula Rasa.
Jacques Brel. Perhaps his name needs no introduction, no elaboration. He was a legend; a composer and a singer of talent and charisma who took his audiences to a world of pain and joy. His genius was capturing the fullness of life, whether tender or savage. Every musician lives in the shadow of his legacy.
“[Godfrey]… summons the spirit of the great artist and makes it his own..” – Brent Meersman
The Shadow of Brel is Godfrey Johnson’s eagerly awaited solo show of the master’s greatest works. In 2007 Johnson won the Fleur du Cap award for Best Performance in a Cabaret for his arrangements and accompaniment of Claire Watling in Kissed by Brel. Since then his fans have clamoured for more of his haunting, evocative style.
He was nominated again in 2009 for his performance in Flirting with Coward, directed by Sanjin Muftić, which honoured the spirit and wit of the 20th century composer Noel Coward. The Shadow of Brel is Johnson’s fourth collaboration with Muftić in what has been a fruitful artistic partnership.
The Shadow of Brel premiered at Yawazzi’s theatrical venue Tabula Rasa in February 2010 to much critical acclaim and excellent reviews.
